“Republica
Dos Kágados” is a photographic series on one of a dozen Repúblicas
in Portugal. These republics are self-organised student accommodation
communities whose structure has been legally protected for the last
700 years. The long-standing existence of these organisations led to
each developing its own identity.
The Kágados, as the residents of these República call themselves, have their sovereign home in a house in the Old Town in the city of Coimbra. In this house, the relationship of its inhabitants with the past of these communities is to be seen everywhere.
From this perspective, the República Dos Kágados is explored through photography and placed in a fictional forest. This series of pictures shows the interiors of the house that has developed its own life: a universe that stretches beyond the human beings, the needs and the traditions of those that live within it.

„República Dos Kágados“ ist eine fotografische Serie über eine der dutzenden Repúblicas Portugals. Diese sind selbstverwaltete Studentenwohngemeinschaften, deren Struktur seit mehr als 700 Jahren gesetzlich geschützt sind. Die Langlebigkeit dieser Organisationen hat es
ermöglicht, dass jede ihre eigene Identität entwickeln konnte.
Die Kágados, wie sich die Bewohner dieser República selbst nennen, haben ihr souveränes Zuhause in einem Haus in der Altstadt Coimbras, in dem die Beziehung der Einwohner zur Vergangenheit ihrer Gemeinschaft überall sichtbar wird.
Aus dieser Perspektive wird die República Dos Kágados fotografisch erkundet und fiktiv in einem Wald verortet. Die Fotoserie zeigt allein das Interieur des Hauses, welches ein Eigenleben entwickelt: Ein Universum, das allen Lebewesen, ihren Bedürfnissen und Traditionen übergeordnet ist.
